What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a science, art, and philosophy that concerns itself with the relationship between the nervous system and the function (health) of the body.
The Science: Since its beginning, chiropractic has been based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body.
While the brain is protected by the skull, the spinal cord is more vulnerable, covered by 24 moving vertebrae. When these bones lose their normal motion or position, they can irritate the nervous system. This disrupts the function of the tissues or organs these nerves control, and is called the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.
Chiropractic is the science of locating these areas of spinal malfunction, the art of correcting them, and the philosophy of things natural.
The Art: After a thorough examination and a review of your health history, your chiropractic doctor will recommend a specific care program. If yours is a chiropractic case, this will include specific spinal adjustments.
The word adjustment describes hundreds of ways of using carefully directed and controlled pressure to restore spinal bones to a more normal position and motion. When spinal function is improved, nervous system function (health) can improve too.
After years of training, chiropractic doctors become experts at using just the right amount of force in the right direction. This may require a quick movement or in other instances a slow and constant pressure. Chiropractic is truly an art.
The Philosophy: Besides the science and art, chiropractic has a philosophical aspect. Chiropractic doctors recognize that regardless of the type of doctor you consult, doctors don’t heal, only the body can heal itself. So your chiropractic doctor’s main purpose is to reduce interference to your inborn healing ability.
How does Chiropractic work?
Chiropractic works by restoring your own inborn ability to be healthy. When under the proper control of your nervous system, all the cells, tissues, and organs of your body are designed to resist disease and ill health. The chiropractic approach to better health is to locate and help remove interferences to your natural state of being healthy.
A common interference to the nervous system is the 24 moving bones of the spinal column. A loss of normal motion or position of these bones can irritate or impair the function of the nervous system. This can disrupt the transmission of controlling nerve impulses.
With improved spinal function there is often improved nervous system function. Your chiropractic doctor can help remove interferences that may be impairing normal health.
Since the primary focus of your care is improved nervous system function, chiropractic can have a positive effect on many health conditions not normally thought of as "back" problems.
What do Chiropractors do?
Helping to restore proper spinal biomechanics and nervous system function begins with a case history. This gives Dr. Alfie a background about your health, such as surgeries, accidents, the onset of your condition, and other details affecting your current health.
After reviewing your history and discussing your specific problem, a thorough orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic examination is performed. X-rays may be taken to uncover structural and functional problems associated with the spinal column. These examinations help identify areas of spinal malfunction and resulting nervous system deficit.
The findings of these examinations are explained and a plan of chiropractic adjustments are recommended. Progress is monitored with periodic examinations and follow-up reports.
Since the word "doctor" comes from the Latin word meaning teacher, regardless of your doctor’s unique clinical approach, he has a strong commitment to patient education.
What Are The Current Educational Requirements To Be A Doctor Of Chiropractic? Today’s Doctor of Chiropractic is well educated.
Chiropractic colleges require a minimum of four academic years of professional resident study, including clinical experience under strict supervision, preceded by a minimum of two years of college work with a curriculum concentrated in the biological and basic sciences, and clinical disciplines. The remaining two years emphasize practical or clinical studies dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of disease with approximately half the time spent in college clinics.
